ABOUT THE EVENT: Sunday November 16, 11am-4pm, Bain Reserve, Merlyn Street, Merlynston, North Coburg.

The Merlynston Diverse Voices Festival is a community-based event run by Merlynston locals working in conjunction with arts group Collaborative Cultures. The first festival was held in November 2012 and was a great success; a campaign to see Merlynston’s 1920s-built Progress Hall refurbished for community use was a springboard for the 2012 event. It attracted hundreds of people throughout the day, with performances by local groups Morleand City Band, The Perfections, The Miserable Little Bastards, Short Order Shefs as well as Coburg Primary School’s ukelele band. Ajak Kwai and Kutcha Edwards also performed.

Hay bale seating, extra performances in Merlynston’s Welcome Shop and kids activities including face-painting and hat-making workshops contributed to a great atmosphere. The 2012 festival was a sustainable event with solar-generated stage and PAs, and composting toilets brought in for the day.

This year’s festival will be funded by community grants from Moreland City Council (Celebrating Place grant), Multicultural Victoria, and through direct fundraising within the Coburg North community.

We’d like to make the 2014 festival even bigger and better, inviting artists, muicians and community groups from Coburg, North Coburg, Fawkner and surrounds to get involved. We envision two music performance spaces, separate exhibition spaces, kids’ craft and music workshops as well as food and craft stalls and roving performances.
